Essay Formats Are Important Considerations in Writing

The writing of essays requires students to adhere to basic essay format instructions. These essay formats need to be adhered to ensure proper and logical organization of essays. It also provides uniformity in academic essay writing. One of the most commonly used formats is the APA. Apart from this format, there are the MLA, Chicago and Harvard formats which are part of students’ essay writing practices. It is recommended that students have a basic understanding of all these formats. However, in this article, let us discuss the APA format.

The Basics of APA Format

The American Psychological Association or APA is used to cite sources in the social sciences. Provided below are some general guidelines of the APA format.
• The APA format requires you to allocate 1” margins on all four sides of the paper.
• The font used for this type of format is Times Roman, 12 points.
• A page header is used at the top of every page.
• The title page will comprise of student’s name, school, course, and the professor’s name.
• The entire document has to be double spaced.
• Capitalizing only the first words of the title.

Citing Sources in the APA Format

At some point in your academic document you will need to use sources to back your claim. This adds credibility to the essay. This means referring to works of others. These sources need to be cited in your essay in the proper essay format. There are two types of citations which are used in the APA format. The first one is used in the text of a paper and the other is used in the end of the text. For example in the first method, you will state;

Al Gore (2006) has stated on the issue of Global Warming “Future generations may well have occasion to ask themselves, “What were our parent thinking? Why didn’t they wake up when they had the chance?” We have to hear that question from them now.

The second method is;

“Future generations may well have occasion to ask themselves, “What were our parent thinking? Why didn’t they wake up when they had the chance?” We have to hear that question from them now. (Al Gore 2006)

This method can be used if using multiple authors as well. However, the first time you cite the sources you will do so as before, but if repeating the process you will have to use the name of one author and use the abbreviation “et al”. All these citations should be given proper respect in the References section of the paper.

Although all essay formats have various requirements which need to be adhered, you should verify these requirements before writing the essay. This is to ensure that the professors have not omitted or added any other requirements into your formatting.
